JAMES RAY BERGMANN, M.D.

Dr. Jim Bergmann became a member of the Board of Directors in 2003.  He began working with The Heuga Center in 1988 after skiing in the then Jimmie Heuga Ski Express (now Vertical Express for MS) at Stratton Mountain and serving as Medical Director for the CAN DO program in Vermont.  As a long time member of the medical staff Jim continues to present at programs on topics related to health and wellness in MS.

Jim is a Clinical Consultant for Allscripts, a leading provider of clinical software and information solutions for physicians, joining the company in 2004.  He supports sales and development of the company’s EMR (electronic medical records) products.  Jim also practices medicine part-time and continues as an active Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Vermont.

Dr. Bergmann received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in 1979 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry from Fairfield University in Connecticut in 1975.  He completed his first residency in Family Practice at the University of Rochester (NY), Highland Hospital, with an emphasis on Pediatrics and high-risk Obstetrics.  He completed a second residency in Internal Medicine at Highland Hospital, where he also served as Chief Resident with an emphasis on Critical Care and Cardiology in 1983-84.  Dr. Bergman practiced in rural Vermont for 11 years, first in solo private practice, which he expanded to a group of four providers.  In 1995, Jim joined the University of Vermont as a full-time faculty member with appointments in Family Practice, Internal Medicine and Orthopedics, and was the director of the Family Practice Residency Clinical Practice site.  He became board certified in Sports Medicine and was appointed as a team physician for the University, and ran a Sports Medicine/Athletic Medicine Clinic. 

Between 1980 and 1984, Dr. Bergmann held a license to practice medicine in the state of New York; he has been licensed in the state of Vermont since 1983.  He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, American Board of Family Practice, and CAQ Sports Medicine.  Jim is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Vermont State Medical Society, American Medical Society, American Academy of Family Practitioners, and American College of Sports Medicine.

Jim was honored in 2001 and again in 2003 as “Teacher of the Year” by the Department of Family Practice, University of Vermont School of Medicine.  He has presented numerous workshops and lectures at professional conferences and medical schools on sports performance and sports injuries (foot, ankle, wrist, hand, hip, pelvis, knee, shoulder).  Jim also speaks on maintaining wellness in multiple sclerosis for state and local groups.  Since 2000, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Carlos Otis Clinic located in Stratton Mountain, VT.

An avid skier, Jim has been a member of the National Ski Patrol for over 16 years, serving as the Medical Advisor to NSP and the Patrol Medical Director at Stratton Mountain.  Jim is the proud father of three sons:  Ryan, Kristofor, and Patrick.
