Pat Kennedy leads the way as the first Heuga Center nurse educator

Empowering.  Positive.  Comprehensive.  Innovative.  Effective.  Empathetic.  Responsible.

These qualities describe Pat Kennedy, MS certified nurse for 20 years, as The Heuga Center’s first nurse educator.

“We’re excited to have Pat take on an expanded role at The Heuga Center because she will help us accomplish our strategic goal of becoming a principal knowledge resource for people living with MS,” said Brian Hutchinson, president of The Heuga Center.

Although Pat is taking on an expanded role at The Heuga Center, she’s still going to do what she finds most rewarding—helping people and families living with MS.

“I cherish working with people at The Heuga Center—what a joy,” said Pat, RN, CNP, MSCN and 19-year Heuga Center program staff member.  “Working for The Heuga Center allows me to use my skills that I don’t use in a regular office.”

The most rewarding moment of a CAN DO program is when participants show they understand the symptom-management techniques she’s teaching them, said Pat.  For example, some participants sit in their chairs for five days during the program with confused expressions on their faces.  Then they slip out of their confused haze and say, “Now I understand.  I wish I knew what I know now 10 years ago.  I never heard that before.”

Once she says goodbye to the program participants she often asks herself, “Did I make a difference?”  The most challenging part about working on the program staff is wondering how the program participants are managing their MS after attending our programs, said Pat.  Are they incorporating the Center’s methods for managing their MS into their daily lives?

As The Heuga Center’s nurse educator, Pat will interact with program participants on a more regular basis when they call The Heuga Center to ask questions that range from how to cope with MS exacerbations to how to stay cool to avoid worsening symptoms.  Her skills and experience in MS care and treatment will develop The Heuga Center’s current programs by providing comprehensive, up-to-date information from her healthcare professional network, while expanding The Heuga Center’s national presence.

The Heuga Center should be recognized and appreciated by healthcare professionals, said Pat.

And she’s going to work hard toward making The Heuga Center more recognized and appreciated by the healthcare professionals by leading the way as The Heuga Center’s principal resource on quality of life management for people and families living with MS.
